About the Project

Welcome to the Black Boxes Open Source Research Project!

This project is part of my Visual Anthropology master thesis for the University of Amsterdam. The goal of this project is to be a collaborative platform that brings together Scientists, Artists and Users in order to explore the tension between complexity and explainability in A.I. Algorithms.

As algorithms become increasingly more complicated, questions rise regarding our ability to clearly explain how they came up with their decisions. This phenomenon concerns both their creators and the users alike.

In order to explore this tension from multiple perspectives, the “Black Box” metaphor and its many interpretations can be useful; both scientifically and artistically.

For these multiple perspectives to meet and be voiced this research will use an Open-Source Inspired Methodology. For that reason a Discord server has been created, where we can share our thoughts in any shape and form we want.

Around April 2024 I will gather the produced material [audio, text, visual ect.] and incorporate them in my Text / Visual Thesis. This doesn’t mean that the material belongs to me, and all participants are encouraged to create their own interpretations.

For a more detailed explanation of the project, my intensions and theory behind it visit the User Manual.
